Why is the room heated?

Bikram Yoga is unique in that it is practiced in the safe environment of a heated room. The heat increases muscle relaxation and blood circulation enabling deeper stretching and minimizing risk of injury. The heat also strengthens the cardiovascular system by increasing the heart rate, while massaging the deep tissues, glands and organs resulting in significant improvement of all systems and elimination of toxins through sweat. You will begin to feel the results almost immediately!

I have never done any yoga and/or I am completely out of shape. Is Bikram Yoga for me?

This is Bikram's Beginning Yoga Class, specifically designed for beginners with no prior experience in yoga. Each class follows the same format, and you will find a range of first-time students to highly advanced practitioners in class. You will see people of all ages and experience levels. Whatever you think your ability or fitness level is, Bikram Yoga is designed to meet your level. Remember Bikram's most famous quote: "Never too late, never too old, never too sick, never too bad to start from scratch and begin again."

What are the benefits of practicing Bikram Yoga?

Within the 90-minute session, you will work out every muscle, tendon, joint, ligament, organ and gland while systematically moving oxygenated blood to every cell of the body. The type and sequence of the stretching and compression postures ensure that the health effects are optimized, massaging all internal organs, flushing out the cardiovascular system, and stimulating the endocrine and nervous systems, thereby releasing any deficient hormones and enzymes. The result is improvement of health to all systems, reduction of stress, strengthening of the immune system and healing of injuries.

You will leave each class feeling rejuvenated and energized. Bikram Yoga builds strength, flexibility, grace, balance, and endurance, ultimately promoting the creation of a lean and healthy body inside out. At the same time, it has positive effects on mental well-being, making you more productive, focused and balanced, resulting in an eventual union of the body, mind and spirit.

What if I'm not flexible?

People who do yoga do not need to be flexible before they take up the practice. Anybody can do the yoga. After a few weeks, you will be surprised at the improvement you see. Whether it is a large improvement or a smaller one depends on the frequency of your practice, your efforts during practice, and your body's own capabilities. Try for yourself and be amazed.

Can I lose weight?

Yes! Bikram Yoga is physically challenging even for experienced practitioners. During the 90-minute session in a room heated to 40°C, you will work out every muscle, tendon, joint, ligament, organ and gland. With dedicated practice, you will lose inches and develop muscle tone and strength. Although Yoga's primary purpose is not as a weight loss program, many people find that a regular practice helps them achieve their ideal body weight. The speed of your results is based on your physical condition, your lifestyle, and how often you are able to come to class..

How long before I see results?

Most people start to feel some benefits almost immediately but the most profound and long lasting benefits are cumulative. They will continue to accrue as long as you continue to practice. Yoga is not an overnight fix, but many people report feeling positive effects after only a few classes.

How many times a week should I practice?

Particularly in the first two months, we encourage you to attend class as frequently as you can, ideally 4-5 times a week. Bikram recommends daily practice so your body can adjust to the exercise in a heated room and learn to perform each posture correctly. Unlike other forms of exercise, it is not necessary to take a "resting" day from Bikram Yoga. The more you practice, the more benefit you get. One of the best things you can do for your overall health and well-being is to create positive habits. You should consider your yoga practice as internal hygiene: you have to clean and massage your inside to achieve good health. Practicing Bikram Yoga on a regular basis will not only give you a lean and healthy body but will help you, perhaps for the first time in your life, get to know your body and its needs well enough to do what is right for your unique situation and lifestyle. If your schedule does not allow you to practice at least three times a week, try to come as often as possible.

What should I bring for my first class?

You will be sweating a lot, so dress accordingly. Clothing that is close-fitting, breathable and lightweight is more comfortable. Women wear tight sports top and bottoms. Men wear shorts or swim trunks. Avoid baggy clothing. Bring a tall bottle of water (can be purchased at studio), two large towels and a mat (can be rented), and a photo I.D. Stay well hydrated before class but do not eat or drink coffee within 2-3 hours leading up to class. Avoid large meals at least 3 hours before class.

Please arrive 30 minutes before your first class to register.

I feel nauseous and dizzy during class. Is this normal?

When you first take up Bikram Yoga, it is quite common to feel dizzy, light headed or sick during your first few classes. This is likely because your body needs a few classes to adapt to the heat. However, your body gradually begins cleansing itself as a result of the yoga practice. When you feel slightly unwell, take a break, drink some water and rejoin whenever you feel ready. After the first few classes, this sensation will pass.
